I posted this desire to the list several months ago and got a brilliant
response from Nir Hermoni: use 0 intensity spot lights to get views from
any position you want. You can simulate camera zoom factor by adjusting
the spot cone angle, and you can set light targets the same way that you
set the camera target. In addition, since Make Preview will render a
preview animation using whatever view is selected in Layout, you can make
a preview from any camera position you want.
When we know we're going to "shoot" the same scene from multiple camera
positions, we add a NULL object for each camera position. One NULL becomes
the parent of the real camera, and the other NULLs become the parents of
the spot lights which give us our layout views from the additional
cameras. We set up the camera positions and paths by moving the NULLs
around, not the lights. When we're ready to render from a particular
camera position, we change the camera's parent to the NULL object that's
in the shooting position and away we go.
According the Allen Hastings's post of 8 August 1994, the additional 0
intensity lights will not affect rendering time.
